song of the week - black balloon

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruc1jTK2H_s&feature=related

black balloon
the kills

elevator straight into my skull
the escalator rises as it falls
i swear our chant is crashing in my mind
you can hold on but I wouldn't waste your time

farewell my black balloon
farewell my black balloon

i've stood in a thousand street scenes
just around the corner from you
on the edge of a dream that you have
has anybody ever told you it's not coming true

farewell my black balloon
farewell my black balloon, the weather had it's way with you
farewell my black balloon, the weather had it's way with you
farewell my black balloon

discovered this band only last year. black balloon turned out to be my favorite in the album "midnight boom". watch out for them coz they will come up with a new album pretty soon, sometime april.

what does she mean by black balloon? people say that it's a euphemism for heroin. hmmm... somewhat absurd but a valid point of view. for me, the black balloon can be a person, a bad habit maybe, or even an idea or feeling that weighs us down. regardless what it stands for, the song is about coming to terms with reality, and finally saying goodbye. we all have our black balloons.

korean horror movie festival 2010

i missed this last october at shang cineplex but thanks to the internet i was able to see two of the films featured just recently.

http://www.clickthecity.com/movies/?p=9394#

Arang - in this film, two detectives were determined to uncover what happened to a girl who disappeared 10 years ago and her connection to a serial murder case. it's not that scary but makes up for it with an interesting story line.

Epitaph - this film reminds of the series kingdown hospital, on which i saw a few episodes. epitaph is actually pretty good - a lot better than arang. there's quite a few memorable scenes. you know what i mean when i say memorable. i'll be sleeping with the lights on for a few days.

i've also gotten the chance to check out a couple of thai horror films. i will write about them soon. ciao!

notes on my first week ALONE

- what can i say... perfect timing. i arrived on the coldest day of winter so far. temperature was as low as -27 C (and that's without windchill). frostbite can actually occur within a few minutes of staying outdoors. but the good thing is i'm staying at marriott downtown which is connected to the eaton centre. i really didn't have to go out to eat and shop. first weekend was retail therapy :) post-xmas sale at the eaton centre!

- i'm just a couple of blocks away from "the world's biggest bookstore". it boasts of having over 20 kilometres of bookshelves. i think it's in the guinness world of records. and right beside it, there's BMV. it's a bookstore chain that's world-renowned for bargain prices. i guess i picked the right hotel.

- i think i'm starting to gain a few pounds. i blame it on druxy's, harvey's, soly's grill, cultures, booster juice, manchu wok, taco villa, sushi q, and my marriott conscierge pass. i better hit the gym or pool.

- first week was kinda stressful for me at the office. jetlagged and work has started to pile up. this will be a longest 40 days for me.

- i was able to find the nearest church. st michael's is just four blocks away. yey.

beer binge

the best perk of flying business class is the easy and unlimited access to booze especially beer. my more or less 24 hour travel turned out to be quite a pleasant experience. i was buzzed. hehe.

since i was flying on an asian airline, cathay, i decided to stick with asian brews. i was not too excited since it was not my first time to try them, but it's always nice to be reacquianted. beer is beer.

some of the good stuff i downed.

kirin (japan) - this is a light flavored beer with a bit of grain and tinge of bitterness and fairly dry finish. this is the only japanese beer that i ever tried so i don't really have any point of comparison. san miguel super dry is still a lot better though.

singha (thailand)- i think singha is considered the best selling beer in thailand. i'm not surprised. i like it. there are some similarities to san mig light. another thing, last year, chelsea fc announced that its signing singha beer as the club's official beer sponsor. i'd say fairly a good choice.

tsingtao (china) - some facts first.
- tsingtao lager was first brewed and bottled by the tsingtao brewery in 1903
- tsingtao lager is now sold in 62 countries and regions around the globe including japan, germany, france, uk, italy, canada, brazil and mexico
- tsingtao lager is the #1 consumer product exported from china.
- Following its introduction to the united states in 1972, tsingtao lager soon became the #1 selling Chinese beer.

tsingtao is actually pretty good. it's easy to down and versatile for food pairing. i'm not surprised it's #1.

brahma

when we hear the word brazil, the first things that come to mind are models, brazilian wax, and havaiianas. i guess i have to add another thing now - brahma. this beer has a distinct "easy-drinking" taste that's easy to love.

http://www.brahma.com/

i only find this at "the reserve". let me check distillery or beer's paradise if they also have this.

scary shit

got this email from an officemate. this may be a hoax but we still have to be extra careful these days.

where to drink in zambo?

if ever you're planning to visit zamboanga (which i'm doubtful), here's a list of places where to drink. these places are relatively safe if you behave. haha.

1) chinitos - favorite hang-out place of yuppies. my parents and their barkada are also regulars here.

2) lobby bar, garden orchid hotel - dom galore. kidding. elegant and still cheap.

3) antonios grill / cafe sacco - where ateneans gather during xmas break.

4) lantaka hotel - ideal place for late afternoon drinks because of the view of the beach. if you're lucky, you get to see vintas.

5) roadside - i think it's open 24 hours coz i've never seen this place closed. uber cheap food and beer. take liveraide before going here.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

500 pesos in zamboanga will go a looooonnnnnnggggggggg way. but please behave... unless you're planning to wear a bulletproof vest. haha. you've been warned.

javva bar and grill

if ever you're in roxas city, capiz, make sure to visit javva bar and grill restaurant. i say it's the republiq of roxas city. hehe.

the bloomfields

check them out every wednesday 9pm at eastwood, and thursday at 7th High boni high street. they also play every other week at chef and brewer. we were there last tuesday night. the place rocked. i danced the night away with mommys and lolas. haha.

emo

i hate the over accessibility of sinful things. the cookie jar is at eye level and is less than an arms length away all the time.

porn is just a click away. booze can be found in every corner. ministop, seven eleven, ralphs, the neighborhood sari-sari store, etc. drugs is just a phone call away, maybe two. same thing with guns and girls.

who says that we need to be dead to see hell?

i think i'm a little bit drunk. haha.
