second time in eaab

we were supposed to start at 1pm but since we were still in lazy mode (it's a day after christmas!), we started at 330pm. i think i improved a lot. i scored two bogeys and two doubles in a 10 hole game (+3,3,5,6,3,1,4,2,2,1). 30 over par. i'm better but i still suck. haha.

first time at zambo golf

forgettable golf game. i only scored three doubles on a 15 hole game. probably in two instances, i was 8 over. haha. we'll play again tomorrow. i think i'm addicted.

zambo golf is twice or even thrice more difficult than eaab. but it's a lot more fun.

first time at eaab

i haven't played golf in a long time. but my first time at eaab was not bad at all. i scored 2 bogeys and 2 doubles for a 9 hole game. not bad at all. i will play again on monday... but most probably at zambo golf calarian.

'You've got to find what you love,' Jobs says

This is a prepared text of the Commencement address delivered by Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, on June 12, 2005.

I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I've ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That's it. No big deal. Just three stories.

The first story is about connecting the dots.

I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out?

It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: "We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?" They said: "Of course." My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.

And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents' savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn't see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn't interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.

It wasn't all romantic. I didn't have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends' rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5¢ deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example:

Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn't have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can't capture, and I found it fascinating.

None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, it's likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.

Again, you can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.

My second story is about love and loss.

I was lucky — I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and I started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees. We had just released our finest creation — the Macintosh — a year earlier, and I had just turned 30. And then I got fired. How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. So at 30 I was out. And very publicly out. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.

I really didn't know what to do for a few months. I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down - that I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me. I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly. I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley. But something slowly began to dawn on me — I still loved what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over.

I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.

During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife. Pixar went on to create the worlds first computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world. In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, I returned to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple's current renaissance. And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together.

I'm pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn't been fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle.

My third story is about death.

When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: "If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right." It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.

About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas. I didn't even know what a pancreas was. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor's code for prepare to die. It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you'd have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to say your goodbyes.

I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor. I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I'm fine now.

This was the closest I've been to facing death, and I hope it's the closest I get for a few more decades. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:

No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life's change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.

Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.

When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation. It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch. This was in the late 1960's, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions.

Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age. On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish." It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.

Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.

Sa kabila ng lahat ng aking nabanggit, patuloy pa rin ang pagbatikos sa akin ng oposisyon. Ang bintang po nila ay wala pa ring pong asensong naidulot ang ating administrasyon para sa bayan. Hello!!! Isang taon ko pa lang pinagsisikapang iahon ang ating bansa mula sa siyam na taong paglustay sa kaban ng bayan ng dating administrasyon. Sii Barack Obama nga, hanggang ngayon ay hindi pa rin naiaayos ang ekonomiya ng Estado Unidos mula sa walong taong pakikipaggiyera ni George W. Bush. Ito minsan ang problema sa ating mga Pilipino. Gusto lagi natin ng madaliang gantimpala, ng “instant gratification”, ika nga. Mainipin tayo. Tulad na lang ng ating hinihiling mula sa Azkals. Gusto natin, ngayon pa lang, umabot at mag-qualify na sila sa World Cup. Hinay-hinay lang. Maghunus dili muna tayo. Ang pagbabago at pagaasenso ay mararating natin kung tayong lahat, hindi lamang ang pamahalaan, ay mananalig, magtitiwala, at magtutulungan.

Isang pang batikos ng oposisyon ay ang hindi daw wastong pamamahagi ng Priority Development Fund(PDF) or “pork barrel”, na kung tawagin noon ng dating First Gentleman Mike Arroyo ay “personal savings account”. Wala pong katotohanan ang bintang na ito ng oposisyon. Napaglaanan na po ng PDF ang mga lugar kung saan ang mga kongresista ay galing sa oposisyon, tulad ng Albay, Maguindanao, Nueva Vizcaya, Lanao, at Pampanga, kaya hindi po pwedeng sabihin ng mga nasa oposisyon na sila ay “pork-less”. Kailangan lang po tingnan ni Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ang dating First Gentleman para malaman niya na hindi siya “pork-less”. Hindi po literal ang ibig kong sabihin nito. Pero pwede rin naman.

Marami pa po tayong mga plano at programa na maisasakatuparan sa darating pang mga buwan. Maglalagay po tayo ng satellite office ng Senado sa Spratlys. Ang mamamahala po ng satellite office doon ay sina Lito Lapid, Bong Revilla, Jinggoy Estrada, Ping Lacson, Gringo Honasan, at Antonio Trillanes. Tingnan lang natin kung papalag pa ang mga Instik. Para po napapanahon ang serbisyong matatanggap ng mga mamamayan mula sa pamahalaan, mahigpit ko pong ipagbabawal ang Facebook sa mga computers ng lahat ng ahensya at tanggapan ng gobyerno. Google Plus na lamang po ang pinapayagan ng ating firewall. Mahigpit ko na rin pong ipagbabawal ang traffic sa EDSA at sa C5. Gagawin ko pong “priority bill” ang Reproductive Health Bill. Nais ko lang po liwanagin na hindi nasasakop sa RH Bill ang abortion. Ako po mismo ay hindi pabor sa abortion sapagkat natunghayan ko na ang masamang epekto nito sa katauhan ni Willie Revillame na siyang tanging kaso ng abortion na nabuhay. Hindi po ako sang-ayon sa natural family planning method na tinataguyod ng simbahang katoliko tulad ng “withdrawal method”. Napakabigat na pasan at napakahirap na imposisyon ito sa mga tao. Hindi po ito makatotohanan. Pag puputok na ang isang tao, ang natural na gagawin niya ay susulong at hindi uurong. Dapat alam ito ng mga pari at obispo base na rin lamang sa kanilang sariling karanasan.

Hinihiling ko rin po sa media na tantanan na ang pagbabalita tungkol sa aking “lovelife”. Hindi po ako nagmamadaling mag-asawa. Pana-panahon lang yan at hindi hinahanap. Parang tagyiwat yan, hintayin mo lang at tiyak na darating at magbubunga. Nabasa ko po ang isang pag-aaral na nagsasaad na mas mahaba ang buhay ng mga lalaking may asawa kesa sa mga binatang lalaki. Ayon na rin sa nasabing pagaaral, mas mataas ang insidente ng pagpapakamatay sa mga lalaking may asawa kesa sa mga binatang lalaki. Ayaw ko pong mangyari sa akin to. Mas maraming mahahalagang isyu ang dapat ipamahayag ng media kesa sa “lovelife” ko.

Dito na po magtatapos ang aking mensahe. Sa mga nasasagasaan po natin sa landas ng katapatan at integridad sa pamamahala, ito naman po ang aking masasabi: pasalamat kayo at hindi na Porsche ang ipangsasagasa ko sa inyo. Sa dating naglapastangan sa mamamayan sa pamamagitan ng walang kahiyaang pandarambong: naituro sa amin nina Harry, Ron, at Hermione kung papaano makapasok sa Gringotts kung saan ipinatago mo sa mga kalahi mo ang pera ng bayan. Mababawi namin yon, tapos ipapatapon ka namin sa Azkaban.

Sa lahat ng mga kasama natin sa tuwid na daan: kayo ang lumikha ng pagkakataong baguhin ang dinatnan, at gawing mas maganda ang ipapamana natin sa susunod na salinlahi ng mga Pilipino. Matagal pa po siguro bago ako magkaanak, pero gusto ko na kapag dumating ang panahon na magkaanak na ako, mamumulat siya sa isang bansa na maaari niyang maipagmalaki at hindi niya kailangan pang iwanan. Maraming salamat at mabuhay ang sambayang Pilipino.

disappointing loss, kuwait was a man down but we weren't able to capitalize. i guess kuwait got more defensive since they were outnumbered, and able to punish us with their counter attacks. anyway, like they say, football can be brutal. but don't worry guys. there's still a lot to look forward to - the under 23 sea games later this year and the next phase of the afc cup.

keep the faith. the future looks bright.

thanks for the staff of pinchos at piazza mck for the great service. i'm sure i will be watching more azkals game there. until then...

just got home from watching transformers 3: far side of the moon. hmmm. my verdict... i'm still not a fan of michael bay, and i think i'll never be. but i have to thank him though for introducing megan fox, and now showcasing rosie huntington-whiteley to the world. hehe.

there's a lot of discussions going on the web about who's hotter. come on guys. it's not that hard to decide. megan fox trumps rosie huntington-whiteley by a mile. but i have to admit though... the image of rosie huntington-whiteley's perfect bum will linger on my dirty mind for a quite sometime. haha.

ravena the phenom

kiefer unleased 22 points in the first half to give the blue eagles a comfortable cushion to cruise through the 2nd half. admu's win against the archers proved that kiefer is the real deal. we haven't seen a rookie with that much firepower and basketball iq since tenorio.

i guess my trip to araneta was worth it... considering it took me almost one hour to find parking. crazy huh? at least i get to say that i was there when ravena had his first big game as a collegiate star.

this will be an exciting season guys. four-peat is a big possibility.

Synopsis:

Teoriya is a story about loss that centers on the film’s main character, Jimmuel Apostol II. After hearing the news that his father has passed away, Jim goes back home to Zamboanga City after leaving ten years ago in bad terms with his father. He arrives in Zamboanga only to find that his father has already been buried and he doesn’t know where. Jim takes a journey around the Zamboanga peninsula and ultimately into his own self, finding the missing piece of his life.

Filmmaker’s Profile

Zurich Chan is an independent filmmaker based in Zamboanga City. Growing up in a video rental store for ten years, this has been his basis into writing scripts and his visual style. The nature of his filmmaking delves into topics of loneliness and existentialism. Teoriya is his first salvo at being at the director’s helm of a feature length film. According to Zurich, his journey into filmmaking is looking for the true meaning of loneliness in any shape, form or situation because, accordingly, all of us are really and truly just separate beings who are, in this world, essentially alone. Writing all his scripts in Chavacano, combined with his unique visual style makes his films nothing less but different.

when i was in vegas maybe 6 years ago, i had to choose whether to watch a cirque du soleil or a blue man group show. i picked blue man group because they were quite popular at that time. i'm not sure if you guys remember the intel commercial featuring them (i used to call them "humanized" smurfs). so when i heard that cirque du soleil will be visiting manila, it was given that i wouldn't let the chance pass by again.

showcasing acrobatic stunts, enchanting costumes, and a mythological story line, cirque du soleil's varekai is mesmerizing. a lot of people complained that the tickets are too expensive but i'd say it's still a lot cheaper than flying to macau or vegas to experience their dazzling performance.

abs-cbn sports has announced that tickets for philippines vs. kuwait game 2 on july 28 will be on sale starting at 10 am on saturday, july 16 via ticketworld.

lost

i've heard that most people were disappointed by the finale of one of the biggest tv shows of all time. i somewhat understand them, but for me, the ending couldn’t have been any sweeter.

i'm not really gonna try to explain the ending. there's a lot of websites out there that tend to over analyze the series. all i can say is that they were not dead the whole time. everything that happened on the island for six seasons actually did happen. and it's not that hard to figure it out.

lost will be missed. it will be a long time before anything could rival this work of genius.

prison break

after four long seasons, prison break ended in a two-hour series finale. yes!!! it's about time!!!

prison break is one of the many series on american tv that could have been better with one or maybe even two seasons. it's sad that tv producers have a tendency to aim for longevity even though things start to get silly. o well, longevity does equate to money. i just hope that in the near future, producers start to realize that they should focus on telling a complete story, and make sure to end it before they run out of steam.

anyway, the finale was actually good. i enjoyed it because it provided closure. we all need closure... especially if we waited for four fucking years. we deserve it.

Ang Boring ng Araw Ko Kahapon

Kahapon, tinaga ako ng taxi driver. Limang daan daw mula airport papuntang Katipunan. Hindi ako makaangal. Dinikit ko na lang yung chewing gum ko sa upuan niya.
Kahapon sa misa, sabi ng pari sa kanyang sermon na dapat hindi maging makamundo at hindi dapat maghumaling sa mga materyal na ari-arian. Tumango sa pagsang-ayon ang sakristan na kamukha nya. Naisip ko, ang ganda ng bagong Pajero ni Father. Tapos nakatulog ako.
Kahapon, masaya akong umuwi ng condo, sabay sigaw pagbukas ko ng pinto "Honey, I'm home!!!" Nabahala ako nung walang sumagot. Saka ko naalala. Wala pala akong asawa.
Kahapon, nagkaroon rin ako ng tapang na itext at yayain lumabas ang crush ko. Sumagot sya at sinabing may bf na sya. Reply ko "Who's this, please?"
Kahapon, hindi ko maintindihan kung bakit may mga kaibigan akong bumabati ng "Happy 4th of July" sa Facebook stat messages nila. Malamang hindi nila naiintindihan na hindi pa rin tayo ganap na malaya at hindi pa natin lubos na nakamit ang kasarinlan mula sa galamay ng imperyalismo.
Kahapon, pinalitan ko yung Facebook password ko. Nilagay ko ang salitang "etits". Hindi tinanggap ang bago kong password. Masyado daw maiksi.
Kahapon sa grocery, nakita ko merong powdered orange juice. Dagdagan ng tubig, instant orange juice. Meron din powdered iced tea. Dagdagan ng tubig, instant iced tea. Meron pang powdered milk. Dagdagan ng tubig, instant milk. Bumili ako ng baby powder.
Kahapon sa elevator, nasiko ako ng kapitbahay ko. Di man lang nag-sorry. Tuloy lang sa kwentuhan nila ng kaibigan niya. Excited na daw syang mapanood ang Harry Potter. Di daw kasi niya nabasa ang libro. Pagbukas ng elevator, sabi ko "Namatay sina Tonks, Lupin, at Fred". Mabuti na lang kaya ko pang tumakbo ng mabilis.
Kahapon, may nakasabay akong mga madre sa sa 7-11. Bumili ako ng condoms. Nagtaasan ang mga kilay nila. Nakangiting sabi ko sa cashier na gagawa ako ng balloons kasi birthday ng pari ng parokya namin.
Kahapon, napanood ko sa balita si Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. Kinilabutan ako. Naisip ko kasi na malamang pera ko ang pinambili nya ng bra at panty na suot niya.
Kahapon sa lotto station, sumigaw ako "Nanalo ako! Nanalo ako!!!" Dinumog ako ng mga tao. Tinanong ko sila "Kapag tatlong numero ang tinamaan, balik taya lang ba?" Muntik akong magulpi ng mga tricyle drivers.
Kahapon, hindi ako makapili kung ano ang ipapangalan ko kapag nagkaroon ako ng anak na lalaki. Novak or Azkal?
Kahapon, pinakinggan ko ang isang kanta tungkol sa droga. "Let It Be" ng Beatles. Mother Mary=Marijuana. "Speaking words of wisdom". Yeah right. Mga sabog lang ang kayang gumawa non.
Kahapon, binangungot ako. Napanaginipan ko na naka-posas ako sa poste ng kama ko. Wala akong saplot. Tapos pumasok sa kwarto si Kuya Germs at sabi nya sa akin "Walang tulugan!!!"
Kahapon, nanood ako ng football at basketball sa tv. Sa sports mo lang makikita na nagyayakapan ang mga lalaki at nagpapaluan ng pwet pero di sila napagkakamalang bading.
Kahapon sa mall, may nakasalubong akong mag-syota. Ang ganda ng babae. Namputchang pangit ng lalaki. Napaniwala ulit ako sa true love. May pag-asa pa ako kay KC Concepcion.
Kahapon sa dyaryo, nasa front page na naman ang lovelife ni Pangulong Aquino. Lumabas ang pagka-aktibista at makabayan ko. Gusto kong magpakita ng suporta sa presidente at sabihin sa kanya "PNoy, hindi ka nag-iisa".
Kahapon, may nakita akong BMW na naka-park sa tabi ng isang pedicab. Napaisip ako. Dapat siguro ibalik na ang sosyalismo para pantay-pantay na tayong lahat.
Kahapon, tinawagan ako ng kaibigan kong Lasallista. Nood daw kami pag may Ateneo-DLSU na laro na sa UAAP. Kaya ako bilib sa mga Lasallista. Ang lupet ng fighting spirit. Walang kadala-dala.
Kahapon, jumejebs ako nang biglang tumunog ang doorbell ng condo. Nagulat ako't napatayo. It was messy.

The Fête de la Musique is a celebration of music - a true festival of music celebrated in 110 countries and 350 cities worldwide. In the previous years, this was popularized in areas such as El Pueblo in Ortigas Center and Eastwood City Libis. happy bday rizal

in celebration of rizal's 150th bday, i dragged my lil sister to check out the yuchengco museum at the rcbc plaza. the highlights of our visit i guess was getting to see juan luna, fernando amorsolo and carlos francisco paintings up close, and discovering that jose rizal is a certified chickboy. haha.

le marquis

le marquis is the only film i got to watch in the french film festival held a couple of weeks ago at the shangri-la mall. the film was hilarious and quite memorable since most of the scenes were shot in the philippines (cebu and manila i think). it's not perfect but surely le marquis is one of the french mainstream films that i will remember for a long time.

i'm not really a big fan of the mavericks. but since they are against my "hatest" team, i'm rooting for them in the finals. can they do it? i do think that they have what it takes. dallas has a bunch of reliable veterans with nowitzi, which i consider the most complete player in the league, taking charge when he has to.

lebron, watch out for swoosh41 coz he will be burning the net from everywhere, and there's nothing you can do to stop him.

summer blockbusters of 2011

watched fast and the furious 5 and thor this week. both were impressive - great way to kick off the summer blockbusters season. kenneth branagh was a good choice to direct thor. his background on shakespeare definitely was a big factor in bringing thor successfully into the big screen. f5 is the second best, or perhaps the best, of the action-packed franchise.

pinatubo revisited - 7 years in the making

we almost didn't make it. the transport strike. the long wait. the rain. our "unpreparedness". but still... we made it to the crater in 2 hours and 15 minutes. that's freaking fast. thank you sarg. you're one crazy guide. you sent us to boot camp. the trip back was an hour and 15 minutes. by my standard, that's scary fast. i now have to nurse my blisters and sore knees. haha.

i visited bonifacio high street today for the station of the cross sponsored by church simplified. it's my second year. i'm a bit sad though because the solemnity i felt last year was gone. this may be brought about by the fact that quite a number of restaurants are open this year, and new orleans bourbon even had a lounge singer performing. i liked it better last year when only one resto was open and it was very quiet. business is business i guess.

just got home from my first visita iglesia in metro manila. we used to do it every year back in my province. so you can say that my last time was several years ago... possibly 10 years.

we were able to complete only 7 churches. we were planning to do 14 but unfortunately we didn't plan properly. maybe we will accomplish 14 next year. so we better start right after lunch on holy thursday.

frankie's sad songs

i like sad songs. the best songs out there are sad songs. but i do find it funny. why do we listen to sad songs when we're already sad? actually why do we listen to sad songs at all? are we all sadists? who wants to be sad?!

i think sad songs have power. it can turn us from a happy energizer bunny to a sad wrenched poor little creature in a matter of minutes, sometimes even seconds (even before the chorus, haha). sad songs have that kind of influence. it can bring us back to time when we got our hearts broken... then sliced, and diced into a thousand pieces. ouch.

so i guess human beings are sadistic creatures. we do love tragedy.

it's the same reason why romeo and juliet, and hundreds of other tragic stories are close to our hearts.

we are all like a child playing candles, burning our fingertips in the fire... checking out if it hurts. and when it does... it doesn't stop us from putting our fingers back into the fire again. perhaps to validate or to find out if we know better. we never learn. don't we?

two good movies out there

if you're planning to watch a movie this week, why don't you try source code or hall pass. source code is quite interesting. it's ground hog day meets the matrix. this film is directed by zowie bowie who brought us last year's remarkable sci fi triller moon. this 39 year old british director is hollywood's next big thing. hall pass, on the other hand, is the funniest movie i've seen since the hangover. it's everything you expect from the farelly brothers. i've also made a mental note to search for nicky whelan pics in the web. hehe.

my favorite milfs

i had the chance to watch american pie again the other day, and i still find it hilarious. who could forget the pie scene?!!? haha. i actually stopped eating apple pies since then. kidding.

one of legacy that the movie american pie left us is the bringing into life the word milf. and as my tribute to one of the funniest movies of all time, let me introduce to you the list of my favorite milfs.


1) salma hayek - i can't help not still associate salma hayek with the movie desperado. i think she was 29 then. now she's 44 and still smokin' hot.

2) heidi klum - 4 kids! one with her ex-husband and 3 with seal. i can't really blame seal. i'm expecting more babies in the next 5 years. haha.

3) kate beckinsale - hot mom plus an english accent. hmmm...

4) monica belucci - she's over 45 i think, but she could still pass for someone in her 30s. we have to thank the wachowski brothers for casting her in the matrix reloaded. we all know that this 2003 film is responsible for launching her into mainstream.

5) halle berry - at 41, halle berry still has one of the best bods out there. she's still a perennial top 100 hottie in any men's mag. she even bagged the sexiest woman of 2008 title of esquire mag.

bier market @ king street

i saved the best for last. i spent my last night in toronto drinking with larryboy at bier market king street. with over 100 brands of beer from over 24 countries, it's a better version of manila's famous beer paradise at polaris street makati. the mind-blowing beer selection and the sophisticated yet laid back ambience are the reasons why this place is packed on friday and sat nights.

i got the mix und match sampler - a sampling of 6 different flavours, textures, and types of beer. 7 oz per glass. i ended the night with just the "right amount" of buzz (typsy but not quite). i promised myself not to get drunk since i still had to pack. and i'm already 31 years old so im expected to drink responsibly. haha.

my first fantasy basketball head to head experience is a disaster. at one point i was in last place and i now end the season 12th out of 14. crap. hoping to perform better next year.

notes on my last week

- last friday night was unforgettable. sarah mcmachlan was awesome. she's actually very chatty. good job sarah for a very intimate and "personal" concert. also, i noticed that massey hall has excellent acoustics. great venue.

- i was able to squeeze in the roger centre tour friday afternoon. call it time management. haha.

- saturday was tiring. long day. started the day at the wizard world comic con at the direct energy centre. (the world will be dominated by geeks in a few years). decided to walk (using my gps) home after lunch and accidentally came across fort york. i was able to take some good pictures. i can now say that i did the scenic route. haha. also passed by winners store to look out for good bargains. for sat night, i visited a family friend somewhere at thorncliffe drive for dinner. pinoy food galore again!

- sunday was also a long day. we headed to canada one outlet for some shopping. then visited a couple of wineries - peller estates and jackson triggs. for 5 bucks, the jackson triggs tour was a good deal. you get a one hour tour, lots of free wine tasting, and a 5 dollar off on any bottle purchase.

- arrived at niagra around 4pm and had a very late lunch at planet hollywood. maybe linner is more apt (lunch and dinner combined). hehe. niagra falls is gorgeous during winter. i should have come here at january where the falls and river are almost frozen solid.

- lunch at dazzling, king street last thursday. thanks tita for the treat.

- despedida thing with the team at puck n' wings last night. i liked the dragon and also the curry wings.

- last week is hell week. so much stuff to do. work. shop. pack. party. haha.

i'm not actually disappointed with the draw with palestine. palestine is a bigger, more athletic, and skilled team than the azkals. we were even lucky to get out of the match with a draw. we have to actually thank the goal post for a couple of saves. hehe.

good luck to the azkals tonight! kaya natin yan. my forecast is that we will conquer bangladesh 2 - 0.

azkals' 15 minutes of fame is not yet over. trust me.

book 7: good omens

my first encounter with good omens was via audio book. i wasn't able to finish it. i usually fall asleep within 15 minutes. maybe i'm just not the listening type. haha.
good thing my friend sent me a copy of the ebook a week ago perhaps. thanks beng. i owe you coffee for this.

good omens is a collaboration between neil gaiman and terry pratchett. and it's a good one. their style compliment each other. if you're looking for an intelligent yet funny read, go grab this one.

i hope they make a movie out of this book. a very entertaining cast of characters...

book 6: sputnik sweetheart

this is a typical murakami book where the sense of isolation is apparent all throughout. loneliness breaks your spirit and leave you feeling like an empty shell. this short novel focuses on that sense of loss that we feel when we discover that love is fleeting and realize that the closeness we share with someone today will soon fade and may never be recaptured.

this is a good book for people new to murakami. it's a lot easier to digest than most of his stuff.

book 5: choke

choke is a bit better than lullaby. it's cutting-edge and a page-turner. finished the book in three days. this book confirms that i'm addicted to chuck palahniuk. he's maybe in my top five now.

i think this year is a lot better than last year. better pictures and best set of rookies in years. my favorites by rank. hehe.

1) kate upton - a sexier version of mandy moore. i'm in love. haha. the rookie of the year!

2) jessica gomes - it seems like she gained a bit of weight but i still love her. i just realized that she looks like someone i know. hmmm.

3) genevieve morton - a cutie with everything in the right places. it's weird that i didn't notice her in last year's issue. 2010 was her rookie year. time to check the archives. haha.

4) esti ginzburg - i've read somewhere that this hottie made her acting debut last year in joel schumacher's film twelve. i better get hold of it asap. 2011 is her 3rd straight year in si. looking forward to still seeing her next year.

5) irina shayk - the choice for the fifth spot was a difficult one. it was a toss up between brooklyn decker and irina. but i think irina deserves this spot more coz she's the face (or body maybe is more apt) of si this year. good choice by the si team.
