3rd bej ps3 fifa cup

i placed 4th place in the 3nd bej ps3 fifa cup. bad result considering i won the first two tourneys. o well... the streak is over. 

i fielded 2 teams namely chelsea and bayern fc. of the two teams, chelsea suprisingly made it to #4 and loss to the eventual finalist real madrid in the semis. my bayern fc i think is either 5th or last place. sucks huh? 

my bro brian has really improved a lot. his teams, real madrid and man u placed first and second respectively in the group stage. defintely the teams to beat in the next tourney... 

december is usually the time to geek out! hehe.  

2012 christmas viewings

to help me get into the christmas vibe... i decided to watch a few xmas-themed movies. true enough... it kinda helped.  hmmmm... maybe i will do this every year.

1) nightmare before christmas (i never get tired of this christmas classic)
2) a very harold and kumar christmas (i still enjoy watching mindless movies once in a while)

4) arthur christmas (blown away. a new favorite)

the better team won the game. we were caught unprepared. o well, that's football.

we watched the game at dillingers greenbelt 3 becoz nsg was packed inside out. i recommend the angus steak. for 700 bucks, it's a pretty good deal. the beer is also cheap for makati... only around 75 bucks. it goes to say that we drank our sorrows away. hehe.

world bazaar 2012 @wtc

i'm heading out  to my favorite bazaar - world bazaar @ wtc with my sister in awhile. this is my yearly thing. personally, i think world bazaar is much more organized than the noel bazaar by gma tv. the rivalry continues even outside tv. haha.

suzuki cup 2012: azkals vs singapore nil all

i'm actually satisfied with the draw. the team played badly in the first half. i think they were a bit too cautious. but the bright side is that they did a lot better in the second half, and actually posed some serious threats at least a couple of times. singapore can be defeated. the azkals just need to have better control of the midfield and attack more from the flanks, where they are more effective recently.

for the game this wednesday, lucena will be available... this is a very good news for us. also, i hope weiss can give chris greatwich some playing time. maybe a fresh face in the midfield can do wonders for us.

the azkals played superb football. the back four was solid and the midfield did pretty well even without lucena.  the man of the match is de jong for me. he did not only provide phil the assist for the first goal but he was a work horse in the middle and the back.

perhaps the best coached game of the azkals... good job by the coaching staff of starting de jong and reichelt. the substitutions were also done at the perfect time - angel and chiefy provided the much-needed energy to jump-start the offense in the second half. world class goal by chiefy!

suzuki cup 2012 azkals vs thai 2 - 1

it was a very disappointing loss. azkals started out really well. the first 10 minutes was the kind of tempo/pace we want to bring into the tournament. o well... but we don't need to panic yet. we just need to focus all our energies to regroup and prepare for the tuesday battle with vietnam.

the thais deserved the 2 - 1 win. we are actually somewhat lucky. it could have been 4 -1.

2012 book 6: the night circus

erin morgenstern's young adult novel started out strong. the book had so much potential.... however towards the middle, it turned out to a soap opera. nevertheless, i still enjoyed the book. hoping that her next work will fix some of her pitfalls.

i scored 117! 60 is the front 9 and 57 at the back 9. hmmm. i still suck but it is a big improvement from my 128 last month.

the discounted rates for monte vista villa guests have already been discontinued. we paid the regular rate! it's kinda pricey considering it's not well maintained and it's too crowded. imagine 300 - 400 golfers a day! actually, mimosa golf could be the world's busiest golf course. so if you're planning to stay overnight in mimosa, i suggest you book at holiday inn villas - newly refurbished rooms and better facilities.

global fc vs loyal sparks

the azkals errrr global fc advances to the finals at the expense of loyola sparks. i wasn't able to watch the first half but i've heard loyola's defense was iffy. i was rooting for the depleted global fc but in my opinion, loyola dominated the 2nd half. too bad they just couldn't finish properly.

as expected, global fc terribly missed the services of misagh, carli, etc. but the good thing is that their bench is the deepest in the league. most of them can actually start for other teams. congrats again to global fc. i smell championship!

today is probably the last day where you can watch "six degrees of separation from lilia cuntapay" in the big screen. this film is rated 5 stars out of 5 by clickthecity.com. i kind of agree... there are some portions that are a bit dragging but overall it is a great film. it is something we pinoys can be proud of.

catch it while you still can at any sm cinema or at robinson's galleria. support quality local films!

2nd bej ps3 fifa cup

i won the 2nd bej ps3 fifa cup. silly huh?

basically, my siblings and i have this ps3 fifa tournament every once in awhile (usually when there's a long weekend). we pick two football clubs each regardless of the league... then a round robin tourney where the top four teams advance to the semis. the top two teams get home-court and twice to beat advantage.

jaypee picked barca and man city and brian, as expected, chose real madrid and man u. i picked my usual team chelsea and a new one - bayern fc (i used ac milan last tourney). for some weird reason, bayern fc topped the elims with five wins and 3 draws, and my chelsea ended up last place with one draw and seven loses. take note that chelsea was the 1st bej ps3 fifa cup champion (this was last april, holy week i guess). it was an exciting semis with bayern kicking barca out via penalty (2 -1), the finals was a high scoring 4-2 come-from-behind victory against real madrid.

back-to-back champion! i'm smelling three-peat :)

higuan and messi shared the golden boot award with 8 goals each. i had 8 players who were able to score with ribery and mandzukic topping with 5 goals each.

horror binge 2012

every october, i venture into a horror film binge in preparation for halloween. this  year, i decided to go local. we do have quality horror films. you just have to throw out whatever preconceived notions you have about locally made horror films. times have changed.

presenting my list this year.

1) shake, rattle, & roll 12
i agree with philbert dy when he said that the franchise continues to give a mainstream platform for talented filmmakers. jerrold tarog's punerarya alone makes srr 12 worth seeing.

2) shake, rattle & roll 13
supposedly, srr 13 is directed by three of the best filmmakers around - richard somes, jerrold tarog, and chris martinez, but i ended up disappointed. i expected more from them. but anyway, it is still worth seeing. good production quality overall.

3) tiktik: aswang chronicles
tiktik succeeds in offering something new! violently fun and offers a quick peek on the future of philippine cinema.

4) pridyider
it's not bad but it's also not that good. if you're into sam raimi horror films, maybe you will enjoy pridyider... a fresh and courageous effort by director rico maria llarde.

5) segunda mano
disappointing but good acting made the this film tolerable.

6) aswang
hmmm. also a disapointment but good thing i have a thing for lovi poe. i succeeded in finishing the movie. haha.

7) the healing
chito rono still has it. not as good as feng shui or sukob but it's lots of fun.

king & i

looks like the aggressive marketing campaign of king & i paid off. the tickets are selling like hotcakes. good thing we were lucky enough to get tickets for this weekend. i'm crossing my fingers that it will be leo valdez and monique wilson playing the lead characters. we are all set for the 2pm sunday show!

2012 book 5: salmonella men on planet porno: stories

this collection of weird short stories by japanese author yasutaka tsutsui is the best book i've read this year so far. if you're a big fan of murakami or banana yoshimoto, this is definitely something you will enjoy. the crafty author created imaginative/mad short stories that i will remember for years to come. good shit!

i just finished watching the final episode of my favorite drama series nip/tuck. it's a bittersweet ending but a perfect one. 

i hate to admit that the best seasons were 1 - 3. and it was downhill from there. but still, the series was still better than most. 

i'm definitely going to miss the troy and mcnamara partnership/brotherhood, and their fucking crazy lives. 

azkals middle east training camp

i can say that i'm satisfied with the performance of the azkals against bahrain and kuwait. the azkals, currently 147th in the fifa world rankings, was able to hold bahrain (115th) to a scoreless draw and just dropped 2 - 1 against kuwait (112th). looks like we're in good shape for next month's suzuki cup.

two quick notes...
- we really do need neil etheridge, angel guirado and phil younghusband. i really hope they suit up for suzuki cup.
- sabio's long throw-ins were definitely missed. my best back four would be cagara, carli, sabio and gier. we have a solid back four plus lots of options in the bench like juani guirado and ray jonnsson.

long teng cup 2012

congrats to the azkals for winning the long teng cup! it's our first tournament win in 60 years i've heard... or maybe even more. i was not busy enough that i was able to watch all games. not the entire 90 minutes...  but still.

a few quick notes...

- we need the younghusbands especially phil. i don't think wolf has the composure in front of the goal yet
- the new kids, matthew uy, demitrius omphroy, jeffrey christiaens, oj porteria, and patrick reichelt, have great pontential. looking forward to see them steal some minutes from the regular azkals.
- we still need more games to get us in better shape for the suzuki cup.

congrats to up for winning their third-straight championship in the samsung 2012 uaap cheerdance competitiion at the mall of asia arena in pasay today.

i wasn't able to get to see feu (i was busy unpacking. moving to a new apartment this weekend) but i've heard they were pretty good. anyway, better luck next time i guess.

what happened to ust? it was a lackluster performance from the perennial championship contender.

my first golf game after a looooooonnng time. as expected, i sucked. haha. the weather was pretty bad so we only got to play until the 15th hole. rain started pouring hard.

terrible loss. o well. better lose today than on november.

the loss proves how much valuable the younghusbands are to the team. shrock can only do so much. and wolf and araneta really need to improve their finishing. we have to admit that we are too dependent on phil for scoring goals. the team needs more potent options upfront!

impressive performance by the azkals against singapore!

i didn't get to see the entire game. i got home 8ish and i think it was the 66th minute. as usual, when playing against weaker teams, we get a lot of chances but the finishing is just terrible. wolfe had several close chances. same with this new guy. i still have to learn how to spell his name. haha. but i'm hopeful that we will get our act together on the next two games of the asean tour. we need to. suzuki cup is just two months away! no time to slack off.

next game is on friday. this is against singapore. time to step up guys!

afl 2012 @ bgc turf

congrats to the gtu ram b team for winning third place (division b).

this tournament brought about many new experience to me considering i've been playing football since grade school.

1) it was my first time to play keeper in an official tournament.
- my right shoe just gave up on me. with only some scotch tape holding the soles, we didn't have a choice but for me to play keeper. note to self... always bring extra an extra pair if possible during tournaments. you never know when they will fail you. lol.

2) it was my first time to save a penalty shot.
- i guess it was my lucky day. maybe i do have a future in playing keeper. haha. kidding.

3) my first penalty kick and penalty goal
- good thing i was able to borrow my friend's shoes. i decided to borrow only the right since the fit was terrible. I'm size 7.5 and i think he's a six. with this workaround, i got to play upfront for the battle for third. in the dying minutes of the game, i was fouled in the penalty box by a defender twice my size while going for a header. for some reason, i survived and scored the penalty easily. maybe the shoe has some mystical powers. thanks ryan!


looking forward to the next tourney. kudos to the organizers. job well done!

2012 book 4: the girl who kicked the hornet's nest

this book is a fitting ending to the millennium trilogy. it is extremely gripping and well-written. too bad the author, stieg larrson, left the world too abruptly and much too soon.

a magnificent story teller... stieg larrson... you left the world with a mark - a future classic.

blues eagles vs the archers - sept 1, 2012

the know that the blue eagles will win. the archers just don't have what it takes to bring ateneo down this year. maybe next year... this is the last playing year of slaughter, salva, chua, among others.

anyway, i'm still gonna watch the game. not live though... as usual, i failed to get tickets. hehe.

three things i discovered from my trip to india

1) naia 1 should be demolished. the bangalore airport is quite impressive. security is too tight though. it felt like i was being raped. haha.

2) indian food is sooooo good. i can only tolerate it for a few days though. my tummy suddenly stopped cooperating. i'm still burping up to now. lol.

3) contrary to what people told me, shopping can actually be fun in india. i got a fc barcelona cap from adidas for only 450 pesos. good deal huh. hanes briefs are on sale too... 70 pesos a piece is a bargain. too bad i didn't have much space in my luggage. haha.

we went to conspiracy last saturday to see cynthia alexander perform. the place was packed! talo pa mrt. we didn't stay long but i'm glad that we passed by. happy to see a humongous crowd supporting the music legend in her send off series.

azkals vs guam results

we played really well. but i was hoping to get a 5 - 0 result. cagara, lucena, angeles, carli, and guirado were outstanding. but i did wish that weiss experimented more by bringing in the subs earlier in the second half. overall, the azkals had a great attacking game and totally outclassed guam.

i think i can confidently say that we've dominated the game. just check out the stats. finally, we can now play real football against indonesia. we didn't need to park the bus. i'm proud of the boys! the azkals have come a long way.

it was an intense game considering it was just a friendly match. in the first half, the midfield was nearly non-existent but we still had several chances. we were a different team in the second half though. we went on the offensive and the younghusbands delivered again. i'm satisfied with 2 - 2.

i'm guessing that pacman will knock bradley on the 11th round. i have a good feeling about this. i've never seen him this focused.

pacman needs to be impressive this weekend. this is the only way he can score the dream match between him and gayweather.

i'm happy with the draw. wolf had two clear opportunities. sayang. the match proves that schrock is a game changer. finally we have an effective midfield. he just need to spend more time with the boys. it seems that he is always a step ahead. hopefully, we get to play more fluid offense against indonesia next week.

good job boys. malaysia couldn't finish us off. they had several chances. i guess luck is on our side this time.

the bayern vs chelsea game proves that the best or better teams don't always win. character, determination and a little bit of luck play a bigger role than talent alone. i was dead tired from my trip from anvaya cove but i managed to stay up the entire time (with a little help from red bull lol). it was certified classic. there was drama. in fact, it was kinda overwhelming (my 32 year old heart was put into stress test haha). there were a lot of heroes... ashley cole more than made up for the absence of terry and ivanovic.  peter cech made that crucial penalty save. mata was aggressive upfront and was responsible for the corner kick that led to drogba's brilliant header. and of course, there's drogba. his confident penalty kick sealed the deal for the blues. redemption at last.

if you have friends who want to know why we love football... tell them to watch the replay. the beauty of the game can't be explained any better than this.   

2012 book 3: esquire the rules

i've been really busy lately. no time for books! which is a very very sad thing. luckily i got stuck at fully booked bonifacio high street tonight because of the rain... for 40 minutes, the rules by esquire kept me preoccupied... funny shit! and i did save 390 fifty bucks. cheapskate! haha.

an old favorite. brain freeze!

if you're not in a mood for gambling at resorts world, you can still waste money by dropping by game zone. i lost around 800 bucks last night. lol. but it was fun. good... clean... kind of fun!

check out "the house of hell" - a 4d experience. i hate to admit that there were times that i almost shrieked like an 8 year old girl. haha. good times!

finally i was able to get the chance to experience "walk this way" by carlos celdran. for 1,100 pesos, it's kinda pricey for a tour of intramuros... but i do think it's more than that. you get out of it as a slightly different person... perhaps a prouder... more confident filipino.

the blues are on a roll! they played a very disciplined and tactical defense... and only relied on counter attacks for offense. personally, i do think it is the most effective way to win against the best team in the world right now.

chelsea's physicality and patience seemed to give barca's offense a hard time getting their groove on. way to go guys.

tribute to satoshi kon

i was introduced to satoshi kon by erika. i was running out of stuff to download, and i asked her for suggestions. she kinda forced me to check out 'paprika'. and as the cliche goes... the rest is history. after 'paprika', i got hold of 'tokyo godfathers'... then 'perfect blue', and just a couple of days ago, 'millennium actress'. i can't really pick a favorite coz all are really good... but i think 'millennium actress' is something that could be made into a hollywood film. and it has the possibility of it being as "epic" as james cameron's the titanic (with the right director of course). i maybe exaggerating a bit but who knows right?

currently in my must-watch list is satoshi kon's 13 episode television series - paranoia agent. i have so much faith in this genius that i know i won't be disappointed.

rest in peace satoshi. you are immortal for many of us.

i cheated. haha. i'm currently reading "children's" book. boooooo. on a serious note, i highly recommend shel silverstein's works. you can finish most of his stuff in 10 minutes but his message lingers on... maybe for hours, days, perhaps a lifetime for some. enjoy the day guys! i'm getting sentimental here. lol.

2012 book 1 - the strain

love this book. it's written like a movie script. intense pacing with lots of vampire killing action. i'm not surprised at all since it's authored by guillermo del torro (with chuck hogan) . i've heard there's already a movie in the making. already looking forward for it.

the strain is the first book of a trilogy. more vampire hunting action to come!

but after seeing hunger games this weekend, i believe jennifer lawrence is perfect for the role. i cannot think of anyone right now that can top her performance as the gritty yet vulnerable heroine of this best selling trilogy.

hunger games will definitely satisfy book fans' appetite (solid pace and acting). so head to greenbelt 3 and line up for tickets!

in the heights

i enjoyed "in the heights" tremendously! i was never a fan of nyoy volante (actually even up to now hehe), but he did an impressive job as the lead character "usnavy". he should not be worried about his waning singing career since it looks like he has a future in theatre. the cast is also packed with theatre-heavyweights. awesome production overall!

atlantis prod has consistently delivered quality musicals/plays over the years. keep it up guys! they are definitely cooking something up for june. so watch out for it!

"in the heights" is a rerun. and today is actually the last day. so hurry up... i think there might still be some available seats. have fun!

3rd philippine international pyromusical results!

the 2012 philippine international pyromusical results are as follows

champion: canada's fireworks spectacular
2nd place: finland's oy pyroman and australia fireworx inc
3rd place: netherlands' royal fireworks

we were also at moa last sat night. crazy traffic and humongous crowd. italy's performance was okay. nothing special but decent enough. philippines dragon fireworks' performance could have been awesome, if not for some major technical problems. good thing they were able to sort it out. the finale was ASTIG! one of the best i've seen.

football is a cruel sport. i'm broken-hearted.

we almost had it. anyway, i think we lacked mental toughness, and our defense line was a little too deep. weiss should have kept caligdong in the game. we didn't need to play too defensive coz our counter attacks were effective. we can't counter effectively without legit midfielders. o well... these things happen.

i'm still proud of the the azkals. they have made the country proud.

for now, i'll drink a couple of san mig light to ease the pain.

azkals vs tajikistan 2 - 1

i was right! we've made history! it was a crazy evening at home. we were celebrating like we won the championship! hehe.

we are now in the semis. this is the azkals' biggest accomplishment so far. they are actually playing in a different level now. this is coming from someone who have followed them for two years.

man of the match of course is angel guirado. he scored the winning goal, and was also involved in the first goal with a superb pass to phil.

congrats azkals! i'll remember this day for a long time. cheers!

i think she's right. sports bring out the best and worst out of people.

summer in the city

for most, summer means boracay. however, for people who too busy to squeeze boracay into their schedule, there are a lot of alternatives. summer in the city can be as much fun as in the beach. all you need is ice cold drinks (preferably beer, mojitos or sangrias) and the company of good old friends.

1) rue bourbon (burgos circle, the fort)
- i like the cajun vibe. this is how a real bar should look like. they also have stella artois, pink killer, and super bock, aside from the local stuff, on their beer list. make sure to try out the cheesy nachos. it’s the perfect beer match.

2) luna (wilson st, greenhills)
- definitely the best place to hang-out in the greenhills area. comfy interiors, excellent service, and relaxing ambient music make this place a winner.

3) basty’s (ground Floor, net quad bldg, 30th street corner 4th avenue, fort)
- looking for a quick spanish fix? then head out to basty’s to savor their tapas and pica-picas. aside from the affortable spanish cuisine, they also offer the best sangria in metro. sangria is just perfect for hot and humid summer nights.

4) texas roadhouse (bonifacio high street, the fort)
- i think this place offers the cheapest beer in the fort area. you also get a free bucket of nuts along with it. ideal place to hang out after an hour of jogging in the area. so rest your tired legs and enjoy a giant mug of san mig draft.

5) white moon (2nd floor, manila ocean park, roxas blvd)
- my #1 in the list. this resto bar reminds me of cowry cove, shangri-la mactan. be at white moon around 5pm to enjoy the excellent view of the world-famous manila sunset. and don’t forget to order a glass of ice-cold mojito while you’re at it. if you’re into photography, you might want to bring your dslr and take a few snapshots. an unobstructed view of the sunset, while sipping mojito, with chicane in the background can be a spiritual experience.

2012 philippine international pyromusical competition

i was at moa last saturday to witness the 2012 phil international pryomusical competition. the place was swarming with people. crazy. the pyromanic in me thinks that canada's performance was EPIC. one of the best i've seen! i have a feeling that they will grab this year's title. good thing i was able to capture the epic performance in my s2.

next weekend is the last weekend! who knows... italy might give us a big surprise!

we were dominated by a much superior team but i think we did pretty well. valiant effort by the azkals especially by neil etheridge. without neil, it could have been 5 - 0!

i hate it when networks cancel shows without a proper ending... especially if the tv series lasted for four yesrs!

i know that heroes didn't live up to its potential. but i thought it was pretty decent. and i would have loved to see how it ends. we've invested four years!!!

nbc. you owe us! a 2 hour tv movie would suffice.

sweet dreams are made of this!

paprika was a surprise. i downloaded it just because erika recommended it... oh man... i think satoshi kon is a genius. great musical score, out of this world animation, and a mind-bending (inception-like) story line.

i recommend this to everyone! it doesn't matter if you're a fan of anime or not. this film tackles a lot of relevant stuff - like technology, internet, and how they "dehumanize" us. i now need to check on other satoshi kon films. it seems that he has a lot to say.

we played better second half. but we were still outclassed. less than a month before the challenge cup and we're still striving to get in shape. i think we're lucky to get away with only 1 - 0 lost. 30% possession is not acceptable! impressive performance by sabio and wolf though. keep it up guys!

pba dream game 2012; blue eagles vs the archers!

i only got to watch the first half coz i couldn't keep my eyes open. i only had 2 1/2 hours of sleep the night before and was in the golf course the whole day. when i checked the results this morning, i was not surprised. the eagles got their asses whopped! i noticed that they didn't play with intensity the first half, and they were just out there to have fun.

the game was for the benefit of the cancer and hematology center of the philippine children’s medical center in quezon city. so it's all good... putting the healthy rivalry into good use.

goals for 2012

i remember writing down my goals for 2010. and i just checked them now. guess what. i only fulfilled one! lol.

goals for 2010.
1) maintain my weight at 125 lbs - ended 2010 at 130. i'm now at least 132!
2) join a half-marathon - i was able to join a 15K fun run though.
3) read at least 12 books - i think i read at least 20 books.
4) see the doctor for a general checkup - last general checkup was 5 years ago! i should really see a doctor.
5) fish and veggies on weekdays - i was able to do this for only 2 months.
6) pray the rosary every night - this only lasted for three days.

now... my goals for this year!

1) lose weight
2) join a half-marathon
3) read at least 20 books
4) see the doctor for a general checkup

golf tips from coach vic

things i should keep in mind!

when hitting
1) keep my arms together at all times.
2) don't grip too tight. a relaxed grip should be fine.
3) hit the ball first before twisting my hips.
4) eyes on the ball. avoid look-up.
5) complete my swing in one motion!
6) pronate!

when putting
1) proper stance. lock my knees and hips.
2) use my left hand. right hand is just for support.
3) don't hit the ball with my wrist. putting is shoulder movement. think "pendulum".
4) short swing. longer follow through.
5) relax. don't be stiff.
6) don't be too excited or in a hurry. perform practice swing at least two times before my shot.

i'm still in search for my first par. hopefully i can achieve it sooner!
