viva la espana
i just bought a spain "david villa" world cup t-shirt at adidas gbelt. preparing myself for the world cup. haha. i saw some germany and england shirts there. you might want to check them out.
i’m tempted to get a pair of spain havaianas flip-flops. i wonder if “all flip-flops” already have them in stock.
http://us.havaianas.com/mens-sandals/teams.html
it's the middle of summer. i do need an overpriced version of red spartan slippers (oops they now call them flip-flops, haha).

book 7: fade
the only reason that i bought this book was becoz of the 70% discount. i never even heard of the author. fade (by robert cormier) was a bargain. and i'm a sucker for good deals. this is why my room is cluttered with stuff that i never get to use. i got them coz they were cheap and thought that they might come in handy someday. you can say that my room is literally a junk-yard. anyway, lets get back to the book. it's almost 2am and i need to get some sleep. since i got the book for less than a hundred bucks, i expected it to suck big time. i'm a firm believer that you get what you pay for. suprisingly, i was wrong. fade turned out to be one of the most enjoyable novels i've read in recent years. it's hard not to like this book. it tackles complex themes like turmoil of adolescence. the responsibility that comes with power, and conquering personal demons with narrative ease. it's bleak, dark, and disturbing yet it's very easy to digest. fade can certainly be a good material for a high school book report. and i say this without sarcasm. it's a book for young adults that everyone will enjoy.
look up for robert cormier in the web. i might start reading his other works. interesting enough.

coffee: is it healthier than you think?
"And in 2009, two coffee studies suggested additional benefits: Coffee-drinking men seemed to have a lower risk of advanced or lethal prostate cancer than other men, and middle-aged people who drank moderate amounts of coffee -- three to five cups a day -- had the lowest risk for dementia and Alzheimer's disease later in life compared to less (or more) frequent drinkers.
Can drinking coffee even help you live longer? Maybe. A 2008 study found that women who drank coffee regularly -- up to six cups a day -- were less likely to die of various causes during the study than their non-coffee-drinking counterparts. Because consumption of decaf coffee showed similar results, researchers don't think caffeine is at work."

who r u picking?
mosley or mayweather? i’m picking mosley. maybe a dent in mayweather’s unblemished record will shut his loud mouth for once. but i’m not predicting a knockout coz we will see mayweather run. and he will be doing a lot of running. that’s what cowards do.
i’m still thinking if i would want to spend 600 bucks to watch the live telecast this sunday... hmmm... 600 can buy me a lot of beer. haha. beer or mayweather (aka the running man) ??? the answer is a no brainer.

kick-ass
it was a movie date with my brother. hehe. we picked kick-ass coz it’s the only movie that fits our schedule. so we got into the cinema without any expectations since i haven’t read any reviews, and i don’t even remember watching the trailer.
then two hours after, we came out the cinema like giddy teenagers. if movies can copulate and produce babies, kick-ass would then be the result of marriage between spiderman and kill bill. comedic scenes were balanced by a healthy dose of violence and gore. the soundtrack also kept the movie alive like it did with zombieland and 28 days later. the characters were unforgettable. who can forget aaron johnson as the dorky dave lizewski? he is the new peter parker. also, chloe moretz, as the 11-year old brutal foul-mouthed hitgirl, was fun to watch. this kid will be a big star someday.
kick-ass is one badass movie. it’s something you should watch on the big screen. the high-octane action, graphic stylized violence, eclectic soundtrack, and quirky characters light up the screen for two awesome hours.
there's now a huge pressure for ironman 2. kick-ass is one tough (superhero) act to follow.

baldrunner
i attended a company sponsored running lecture conducted by jovie narcise (aka bald runner) the other day. it was a two and a half hour discussion on the benefits of running, running techniques and tips, and proper warm-up exercises. it was a looooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnng lecture (since i have the attention span of a 3 year old kid) but i enjoyed it. i admire the speaker for being so passionate about running. i left the lecture hall inspired.
passion is what keeps us alive. so pursue it.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Retired Major General Jovenal 'Jovie' Narcise aka Bald Runner is an active runner and a marathoner/ultrarunner. He formed a group called Team Bald Runner last June 2008.
Team Bald Runner is a pool of seasoned or advanced competitive runners in the Philippines under the supervision and training of an IAAF Level 4 Coach and an Assistant Coach who were previous Champions in Marathon Races here in the country and abroad. Some of the objectives of this group of elite runners is to be able to train as a group and be able to qualify as members of the Philippine Team (National Pool) in Athletics, most especially in the middle, long distance races, race walking, and ultimately, for the ultramarathon.

barca goes down
since chelsea fc has been out of contention in the champtions league, i've been routing for barca fc. last night, inter milan gave barca their biggest defeat under coach pep guardiola. inter milan blasted a 3 - 1 victory over the defending champs in the first leg of their champions league semifinal. bad news for me.
barca now needs to win 2 - 0 in the second leg at the Nou Camp next week to reach the finals. it's a herculean task considering inter milan has been playing superb football lately, and mourinho seems to have mastered how to offset barca's free flowing offense. but then again, barca has the best football player in the world in their frontline - the argentian superstar messi. we'll find out next week if messi can carry his team to the finals. i'm crossing my fingers.

book 6: waking the dead and other stories
i highly recommend this collection of eerie short stories by award-winning writer yvette tan. i read it from start to finish in one sitting. i just couldn't stop turning the pages, story after story.
if i'm to meet the author someday, my first question would be... where do you get your ideas???
so visit your nearest bookstore and buy a copy so you'll know what i'm talking about.
let your mind's eye be awakened.

Gordon goes ballistic during interview, slams rivals
By Cathy C. Yamsuan
Philippine Daily Inquirer
MANILA, Philippines—Apparently fed up with forecasts that he would lose the presidential race, Sen. Richard Gordon went ballistic during a live interview Monday by taking potshots at rivals who are ahead of him in the surveys.
“Even if you put together the accomplishments of [Senators Manuel] Villar and [Benigno] Noynoy [Aquino III], they are nothing compared to what Gordon has done,” the Bagumbayan standard-bearer declared on “Headstart with Karen Davila” aired over ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC).
“Has Noynoy addressed the issues in Hacienda Luisita? So why is he running? Because Mommy died. Because Daddy died. So what? Are we voting on the basis of bloodline? Pedigree? Excuse me,” he fumed in Filipino and English.
Aquino, standard-bearer of the Liberal Party and consistent front-runner in presidential surveys, is the only son of the late President Corazon Aquino and former Sen. Benigno Aquino Jr., who is regarded by many as the fallen hero who fought the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos.
Turning his attention to Villar, Gordon recalled that the Nacionalista Party presidential candidate promised to eradicate poverty.
“Excuse me, even Jesus Christ was not able to put a stop to poverty. [Villar] was Senate President, he was Speaker of the House [of Representatives]. Was he even able to begin the end of poverty?”
Gordon’s tirade began when news program host Davila read a comment from a viewer who said although Gordon was competent, he’s not going to win. (“Magaling siya, kaya lang hindi mananalo.”)
“What does that say about our people? If you don’t have principles, if you vote for the incompetent ones … It’s the fault of these stupid surveys,” he said.
Gordon vowed to go after Pulse Asia and the Social Weather Stations, whose regular updates on the presidential race always showed him a dismal fifth following Aquino, Villar, former President Joseph Estrada and former Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro.
Then he trained his guns on Davila’s network, ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corp.
“I’m asking ABS-CBN right now, why did you stop your presidential debates? Is it because Villar and Noynoy refused to participate? In America, when a candidate refuses to engage in a debate, it means he is hiding something. So when Villar walks out on a debate, that’s the same thing he’d do when he becomes president, when he is investigated just like [President] Gloria [Macapagal-Arroyo].”
Gordon said the network’s compliance with his leading rivals “shows lack of character, not just a tint of bias but a huge color of bias.”
He insinuated that the compliance could have stemmed from pressure from Aquino’s sister, Kris, who is among the most popular celebrities being handled by the network.
Gordon said it was also possible that the Lopez family that owns ABS-CBN would accommodate the Aquinos since it was during the time of President Aquino when it got back the station from the government.

forget the surveys or voting for the lesser evil... vote based on principles.

earth day run unofficial result
i enjoyed the 5K route of this morning's earth run. it's simple and flat ground all throughout. perfect conditions to beat pbs. however, i still felt some discomfort on my right knee. i actually walked a couple of hundred meters coz of the pain. i guess this is a sign that i should see a sports doctor. and i should do this before i sign up for nature valley's half-marathon this may. i already have a useless right arm, i should take good care of my legs then.

philip @ castrol soccer fiesta 2010
if you still haven't dropped by the castrol soccer fiesta 2010 mall tour, this blog entry and video by rick olivares may convince you to.
http://bleachersbrew.blogspot.com/2010/04/philip-warren-gertsson-freestyle.html
i was at Megamall around 2pm yesterday. philip, the fil-norwegian european freestyle football champion, was out of this world. he performed crazy freestyle football stunts i've never seen before, and he's just eighteen years of age! too bad the video mode of my camera was busted and i wasn't able to record his two minute freestyle exhibition.
the last soccer fiesta weekend will happen at the BLOCK (SM City North Edsa) on May 1-2, 2010 (10AM-8PM).
please visit www.soccerfiesta2010.multiply.com for more details.

manila autoshow 2010
http://www.manilaautoshow.com/
to all car aficionados, you guys might want to check out the manila international autoshow 2010 at the world trade center. last day today.
i accompanied my brother yesterday afternoon. i had fun taking pictures. it's been awhile since i've been to something like this.
i'm not really into cars (i'm okay with any car as long as the air-conditioner is working, and it can bring me from point a to point b) but i'm into women, hot models in particular. haha. both are in abundance at the autoshow. so don't forget your cameras (and maybe an extra battery).

7 truths about starbucks
interesting article for starbucks addicts.
http://www.cnn.com/2010/LIVING/04/09/starbucks.trivia/index.html?hpt=Sbin
i’m one of many millions who can’t start a day without a cup of coffee. i drink at least three cups of coffee on a workday. it's the fuel that keeps us, corporate slaves, awake and productive.
as much i love starbucks, lately, i’ve been trying to support the local coffee industry. this is the reason why i visit bo’s or figaro every now and then. bo’s and figaro’s coffee beans are mostly from batangas. let’s all help contribute in keeping the local coffee industry alive.
it’s 3pm... time for my afternoon coffee break. later.

us 2 evil 0
this band, fronted by quark heneras and mich dulce, is this country's version of mates of state.
to those who haven't heard about mates of state. here's the band profile i got from wikipedia.
Mates of State are an American indie rock duo, active since 1997. The group is composed of the husband-and-wife team Kori Gardner (vocals, Yamaha Electone and Hammond B-3 electric organs, microKORG and Casio synthesizers, Yamaha and Rhodes electric pianos, piano, and occasional guitar) and Jason Hammel (vocals, drum set, glockenspiel, other percussion, and occasional Casio synthesizer).
i actually discovered mates of state just recently, only a couple of months before i heard about us 2 evil 0. the two bands are very much alike. both are known for playing minimalist yet solid lss inducing pop tunes with elaborate vocal harmonies. if you like mates of state, you will like us 2 evil 0, and vice versa.
us 2 evil 0 debut album "dirty debutantes" is now available at magnet outlets and route 196. mates of state albums are always "downloadable" in the internet via torrent. haha. i'm kidding of course. i hate music piracy =p
check them out and get hooked listening to their infectious melodies.

15K and still standing
i managed to survive a 15K run (mizuno run) with an hour and a half of sleep. i'm crazy and a bit stupid right? a lot of lessons learned though from my first 15K run.
mistakes
1) forced myself to drink a liter and a half of water an hour before the run. during the run itself, i had three toilet stops - mcdo 5th ave, jollibee, and petron buendia. haha.
2) watched the last full show at 11:30. i was home at 1am but i couldn't sleep until 2am. maybe it was the caffeine.
3) decided not to have breakfast. my stomach was crumbling from start to finish line. i should have grabbed a couple of granola bars.
4) surfed the day before. my body felt like it just came out of a washing machine. but surfing was worth it. no regrets.
right moves
1) three alarm clocks!!! woke up on time.
2) prepared my running gear and essentials a day before the race (ipod and my playlist, camera batteries charged, duffel bag good-to-go).
3) carbo-loaded during dinner.
4) brought powergels. took the first one at the 5K mark and the other one at the 10K mark.
5) applied petroleum jelly at problem areas.
6) popped two capsules of mefenamic acid an hour before the run. my right knee is still killing me.
7) arrived at the fort an hour before the run. had enough time to suit up and do some stretching. plus, finding a parking space was a breeze.
my nike plus workout summary
duration: 1:58'38"
start time: 5:26am
end time: 7:25am

calories: 868
i'm planning to give my right knee some time to rest and recover. injured it while going down the spiral staircase of cable car after a night of drinking two weeks ago. haha. if it still hurts after two weeks, i might need to see a sports doctor.

date night
i watched date night with carlo and derzy who were actually on their date night. that officially makes me a third wheel then. but you have to forgive me coz the last mainstream movie (which means not a foreign or art film) i watched at the big screen was "a christmas carol". and it was ages ago - around last week of november. haha. since the invention of utorrent, the rise of below-50 bucks dvds, and the absence of a significant other, i hardly watch movies at the cinema. i'd rather watch movies at the comfort of my home with beer within reach.
date night won't disappoint you. it's light, witty, charming, and fun. the right ingredients of a date night movie. plus, a movie with steve carrell in it is never dull.
i now want a tina fey for a wife, and leighton meester as my babysitter. that would make a perfect home.

dick for prez
from http://manilareview.wordpress.com/2009/09/01/rooting-for-a-dick-gordon-presidency/
I swiped this from Idiotic Filipinos, it looks like a transcript of an interview.
SCB: So what are your dreams for the country?
RG: I have many dreams for this country. First of all, I want every Filipino to be assured that when they work someday, they have enough to send their kids to school, they have enough for their insurance, they have enough to retire on. That’s a dream, a real dream, an aspiration and it will take time.
I want this country to be proud of itself. I want this country to stand tall, be respected because we have earned it. That’s my dream, enable, enoble, yung hindi tayo pala-hingi, hindi pala-asa. For the country, you have to be a stakeholder. How can I best make the Pasig clean? If I show them that there is a nice walkway and there are businesses out there that they can earn income from. And they will say “Dapat pangalagaan natin huwag nating bastusin.” And that’s how to build a country.
There will always be pain in this life and you have to alleviate human suffering, that’s a Red Cross motto. Uplift human dignity… You cannot give that unless they know I have dignity and I have earned that.
Look at this place(referring to his office), everywhere you look, Knights of the Round Table – there’s a higher goal, a lofty goal, use might for right, hindi might is right, but might for right. Don Quixote De La Mancha – a book and a sword, a dreamer because he thinks of the way how it should be. That’s me, that’s what I want your children to be. Because without that aspiration, you are not a human being. You are created by the Lord to be better than what you think you are.
Aim high, you have the power. Bawal ang Tamad. Lalong bawal ang Tanga. You should have a sense of duty, don’t be waited on. Duty first. You have to have dignity, you have to have determination. Those are my slogans. Self-help, self-reliance.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
let's pick the right person to lead the country. di sayang ang boto nyo if you vote for gordon.

Self-help, self-reliance.

let's pick the right person to lead the country. di sayang ang boto nyo if you vote for gordon.
summer means surfing
usually it's flat at la union or zambales during summer... but it's okay. you can still surf... just head to club manila east in taytay rizal. it is just 30 minutes away from ortigas.
they now have a bigger wave pool which means longer rides.
i'll post the pics i took this morning probably tomorrow in fb. good pictures of my brother getting wiped out. haha.
after surfing, we visited our favorite after-surf lunch place - snackaroo at kamuning. hehe... still the best porterhouse steak under 200.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
learn to surf! get stoked right here in the city at the most consistent surf spot ever! psa offer's the philippine's first wave pool sessions.
book now with psa by calling (02) 631-2895 or (92) 357-5452.

no place like manila
it’s good to know that despite the negative image we project to the world coz of poverty, corrupt government, and human rights violations... there are people who appreciate this beautiful city.

why i love books?
i like reading... you get to be someone you are not. be immersed... be involved... and in the end, be affected... you take everything in and go to sleep. but as soon as you wake up, you're back into your mundane existence... as if nothing happened.
but in the end, you cannot say that you are the same person, coz what you take in always becomes part of you... whether you like it or not.
you are what you read.

luck is on my side
they say that kung malas sa pag-ibig, swerte sa sugal...
i guess there's some truth to it. for two straight saturdays, i'm the sat night poker club big winner.
life can sometimes be fair. you can't have everything.

book 5: the sandman - king of dreams
a visual journey back into the sandman phenomenon with fresh insider commentaries on each of the story arcs by alisa kwitney. alisa kwitney was part of the sandman editorial team... so expect to see some illustrations never been published before, behind-the-scenes stories and quotes from gaiman himself.
one doesn't need to have read sandman to appreciate this book. it may even convince someone not familiar with gaiman to start reading the series. this book is for everyone capable of dreaming. this book is for everybody then.

hell week is over
i had one busy week. finally, it's over.
four days of rest and reflection awaits me.
they say that life is short. it is indeed. i'm only thirty years of age but sometimes i feel that i'm old - that it's downhill from where i am. i already miss the energy, spontaneity, and even the recklessness of youth. i now have responsibilities. i can't just stand still and wait for things to happen.
i'm currently reading a book by terry pratchettt. it says that one of the shortest-lived creature on earth is the adult common mayfly. it lasts for one day. try to imagine... living for just one day... this may seem tough for the mayflies. but the important thing is not how long your life is, but how long it seems. to a mayfly, a single hour may last as long as a century. it's all a matter of perspective.
so let's look ahead and not waste time. we should look into the coming days with optimism. frank sinatra was on the dot when he said that "the best is yet to come...".
for now, it's time to rest our tired and wounded hearts...
come monday, it's game time.
the faster you live, the more time stretches out.
